West Coast Academy for Aboriginal Sport, Health
and Education
West Coast Institute of Training recognises that Aboriginal people face challenges to their economic and social well being on a day to day basis. Through a process of dialogue and investigation the College’s Aboriginal Education, Employment and Training Committee identified the development and creation of an Academy of Sport, Health & Education (ASHE) as a key priority.
We recognise that all people have ambitions yet depending upon circumstance they may not be in a position to achieve the goals and dreams they visualised. Through the development and operation of the Aboriginal Sport, Health and Education Academy it is our aim to enable our students to realise their aspirations.
The Academy will be a step in the right direction. It will connect with Aboriginal students in a manner that recognises their needs and works towards making their dreams possible. By engaging its students through training the Academy will open up opportunities so that its students can see and obtain a positive future, one which they have determined as being meaningful to them and, through the Academy, supported
to achieve.
As a premier training and education facility in sport, health and education for Aboriginal people, the specialised curriculum at the Academy will service demands for greater Aboriginal community engagement. It will fulfil the following objectives:
- Deliver quality, innovative and culturally-sensitive training and education;
- Develop learning pathways;
- Improve employment opportunities and outcomes in the field of education, health, sport and fitness; and,
- Directly engage the Aboriginal community.
