West Coast TAFE launches “Reinvention through Innovation”

29 July 2009

West Coast TAFE today announced the launch of “Reinvention through Innovation”, a case study publication which showcases how the institute has worked with clients to reinvent itself and improve its services through innovation.

“Reinvention through Innovation was born from the suggestion that West Coast TAFE was doing a lot of good work at the forefront of innovation, but were not communicating this effectively to the world,” said West Coast TAFE Managing Director Sue Slavin.

The publication was drafted by independent consultant Dr John Mitchell who sighted twelve examples of innovative activity at West Coast TAFE, conducted intense research among its staff and stakeholders and after some in depth analysis, created the publication to share the institute’s success stories as part of a structured model of innovation.

In the document, Sue Slavin who was appointed Managing Director of West Coast TAFE in 2003, shares some of her organisational strategies for innovation which have led to the institute’s continual re-invention which she describes as “no accident”.

An executive team willing to stretch themselves; the celebration of staff creativity and ingenuity and inspiring a leadership culture of rigorous debate and the scorning of ‘yes men’ are just some of the strategies which Mrs Slavin shares with the reader.

The publication explores West Coast TAFE’s partnerships with RAC, Satterley Property Group, Royal Perth Hospital, WA Police Academy and the City of Wanneroo to name a few.

It also explains how the institute has expanded its training from the traditional campus delivery to a range of new sites including a restaurant, a shed, a youth centre, a kids’ camp, an overseas hospital, a mobile workshop and a community house.

“Reinvention through Innovation communicates the hard work, commitment and dedication that West Coast TAFE staff show in delivering training to our students and is a must read for everyone who has had or will have involvement with the institute in the future,” said Managing Director Sue Slavin.
